THE BARRAS
The Barra family are the Banns of Wildcrest, located just north of the Hinterlands. Here's a handy family tree for the main family, although they're a little bit more sprawling than that, Hector having siblings and cousins out there.
The Barras have been staunchly loyal to the Fereldan throne for generations. They have a reputation as a family of fierce, even savage, warriors; her uncle, father and grandfather all fought in the Fereldan Rebellion, and the Barras fought just as aggressively against the Orlesian invasion before that. It cost them a fair bit of territory, but their dedication was rewarded at the end of the rebellion when Maric restored their lost lands. The Barras are not particularly known for their religious devotion, but they ARE known for being DTF (down to fight) at pretty much any given time.
Their family has a somewhat tumultuous background. The Barras have a history of intra-family feuds and schisms, a few conflicts with different factions of the family vying for control. However, since Bann Hector succeeded his father, he managed to unite the whole family under his banner, and Wildcrest's freehold population has been fairly stable for the last several decades. As lords, they're known to be strict, but fair, and Hector has gained a reputation as an honorable bann.
However, the matter of succession threatens to complicate family matters once again. Hector's first son Verus was to be his successor, but both of Verus's sons, his only heirs, died in the Fereldan Rebellion, and his wife was killed in the Fifth Blight. Although this is no direct threat to his succession, the fact that he's heirless and his brother's youngest child is still unmarried has been a point of increasing tension in the Barra household. Sonia has very little interest in succeeding her uncle, but with Hector’s passing, Verus seems to view her as more and more as some kind of threat to his power.
With Bann Hector’s recent passing, things have only grown more tense, and Verus’s disposition toward Sonia only worse. There is fierce disagreement between her father and uncle on how to run Wildcrest under Verus’s rule, with Xavier advising his brother to consider commerce as a way to show their freeholders that they’re still stable, but Verus seems bent more on shows of more military power.
WILDCREST
Wildcrest sits north of the Hinterlands, the land a patchy mix of fertile ground and barren, rocky soil. During the occupation, many of the lands seized by the Orlesians were the more suitable for agriculture, and with far less food to go around, the people of Wildcrest fell on hard times. It was during this time that the then-bann expanded Wildcrest's existing vineyards to make the best of the land they had left, and wine became Wildcrest's primary export. Since the restoration of Wildcrest's territory, agriculture has flourished once again, but the vineyards now dominate Wildcrest's trade.
